discipline is the ability to control your own intensity (AKA: lock in). This isn’t toughness. It’s about knowing when to work, when not to work, and being consistent in doing so
there are 5 parts to that:
- the intelligence to reason why you should care (nature)
- the willpower to remain consistent (nature)
- the initiative to engage in new routines (nature)
- the love to sacrifice in spite of hardship (nurture)
- the perspective to know what works with you and against you (nurture)

willpower is a subset of discipline. It’s the engine of discipline, and discipline is the science of using willpower effectively
