hi, i’m Joey, and i’m a 29 year old developer based out of Washington State, USA
engineers are at their best when they understand complexity in depth. Artists are at their best when the depth of their process defies understanding. I aspire to straddle both vocations, and I’ve built apps and written albums exploring that
but there’s a cost to generalism. The same skills that make an engineer great can hinder the abilities of an artist, and vice versa. So i’ve setup this digital garden as a generalist playground. Not a personal website or blog —more of a personal wiki for all my thoughts
i think of this as my proof of stake in the human experience. There’s something satisfying about articulating a thought and exposing it the world knowing: “i thought that”. When all the heavy lifting is done by AI sometime in our lifetimes, all we might have left is what we’ve experienced
if there is no peace in the minds of individuals, how can there be peace in the world? Make peace in your own mind first — S. N. Goenka
most of what’s here isn’t written toward any one particular audience. I like mixing up thoughts and seeing where it leads. But I do tag things to keep some structure to bounce back and forth on
- the structure of each note is hashed as an essay, list, freeform, or part of the navbar
- the formality of each note is either personal, reflection, outline, documentation, or ditty depending on how serious or personal I consider it
- i write about lots of subjects. Sometimes, several at the same time, including humans, tech, culture, creation, survival, business, maturity, and dhamma (AKA: “spirituality“). I’m absolutely not an expert in any of these domains, i’m just obsessively learning about them. I’ve indexed a lot of my favorite ideas in nuggets of wisdom
i don’t write articles or blogs. Most of my ideas start small and grow over time. The best part about writing is seeing what I know and believe changing from year to year. I think the blogging model makes writers on Medium and Substack miss out on that experience (but that’s besides the point). Change is the only constant of our own attitudes, relationships, wellbeing, and skillsets. This is only a snapshot in time of who I am and what I’m thinking about

i work in technology (specializing in DevOps, Cloud Engineering, and Observability tools). If you are here for that, yes, i do write about that here too!
